"Around the block" by Laurin
On display from August 23 to September 23, 2018
VERNISSAGE: Thursday, August 30, 5 to 8 pm
In her exhibition“Around the block” showing at La Fab from August 23 to September 23, 2018, Nicole Laurin offers a walk in the ideal imaginary of her childhood.
“Around the block”presents characters both amazing and endearing and tells the comical tribulations lived by Nicole. This series of expressive paintings puts into perspective the discoveries and emotions that marked the creative journey of the artist.
The exhibition is accompanied by music by composer Michel DeMars, to which Laurin's voice adds emotional intensity.
Born in Gatineau, Nicole Laurin is a multidisciplinary artist. As a child, she is interested in singing and drawing. In 1977, she joined a popular music group as a singer. For many years, she collaborated on musical projects and is now a singer and songwriter. At the same time, in 1999, she began studying graphic design and moved to the Magdalen Islands for a graphic designer position. Three years later, she returns to Gatineau where she begins to paint. Since 2011, painting is her preferred means of expression.
"I work by instinct, letting go of my emotions through my characters," says the artist. She starts with spatula strokes using the color of paint that comes spontaneously to her mind, then she moves away, gets closer, turns the canvas until the shape of the character comes alive. “It is by combining the textures and the colors with the brush that the expression of my characters is revealed. The purpose of my work is to give emotion to the portrait, like a chorus to a song”, explains Laurin.
Nicole Laurin's expressive characters have been exhibited on several occasions at personal and private exhibitions in Quebec. In 2016, her work was rewarded during the 'Traces Arts Visuels' event.
